In a major boost for media workers, the Yobe State Government has approved the payment of a lucrative weigh-in allowance for journalists and non-journalists across the state’s media and cultural sectors.

The landmark decision, conveyed in an official letter signed by the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Zainab Muhammad Ago, on behalf of the Head of Service, was made available to newsmen on Tuesday.
The approval follows sustained pressure and a joint push by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), who demanded the restoration of the allowance.
Under the new directive, journalists will now earn 35 per cent of their basic salary, while non-journalists will receive 20 per cent, aimed at uplifting the welfare of media workers in the state.
Sources indicate that the allowance had previously been in place but was disrupted following the implementation of the new ₦70,000 minimum wage, sparking agitation from the affected unions.
In a decisive move on Tuesday , Governor Maimala Buni ordered the Ministry of Finance to commence immediate and full implementation of the allowance without delay.
The development is being hailed as a major victory for the NUJ leadership led by Comr. Rajaf Mohammed and RATTAWU in the state and a clear signal of the government’s responsiveness to workers’ demands.
