Stakeholders Demand Fair Mediation of Farmer-Herder Disputes in Ibi

Stakeholders in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State have called for the establishment of8 a fair and impartial mediation mechanism to address recurring disputes between farmers and herders in the area.

The demand was made during a Town Hall Meeting organized by the Taraba State Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management in Ibi, where participants identified perceived bias in the handling of conflicts as a major factor fueling tensions between the two groups.
Some stakeholders alleged that the actions of certain traditional rulers, religious leaders, and security personnel have contributed to misunderstandings through what they described as partial treatment of disputing parties. They therefore advocated the creation of a special mediation committee to ensure justice and fairness in resolving conflicts.
The stakeholders also emphasized the need for the fear of God and impartiality in addressing farmer-herder disputes. Concerns were equally raised over the use of underage children in open grazing activities and alleged discrimination in the granting of bail. Participants further called for stronger measures to curb hate speech and tackle the growing problem of drug abuse among youths, which they said has contributed to rising crime rates.
Speaking at the meeting, the Director General of the Taraba State Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management, Bishop Innocent Solomon, stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect between farmers and herders.
According to him, conflicts between the two groups have often resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of property, making it necessary for all parties to embrace dialogue and understanding. He noted that both farmers and herders are critical contributors to the economic development of Taraba State and the country.
To strengthen peacebuilding efforts, Bishop Solomon disclosed that the Bureau plans to establish a dialogue platform that will bring farmers and herders together to discuss their concerns and build stronger relationships.
He also underscored the need for genuine dialogue among communities, inclusive governance, and broader participation in political activities as part of efforts to promote peace and stability across the state.
The Director General recalled that Ibi Local Government Area had experienced various forms of crises in the past, some linked to activities from neighboring states and movements through the waterways. He urged residents to support the peace initiatives of Governor Agbu Kefas in order to sustain peace and development in Taraba State.
Bishop Solomon commended security agencies for their commitment to maintaining peace and assured residents that the Bureau would work closely with the Peace Committee expected to be established by the local council to consolidate existing peace in the area.
Representing the Chairman of Ibi Local Government Council, Hon. Emmanuel Ubandoma, at the event, the Leader of the Council, Hon. Mamman Usman Yahuza, described the gathering as the first forum to bring together critical stakeholders to discuss issues affecting the local government area.
He praised Governor Agbu Kefas for establishing the Peace Bureau and pledged the council’s support and cooperation in promoting peace and stability.
Earlier, Bishop Solomon paid a courtesy visit to the council leadership, where he urged politicians to conduct their activities within the bounds of the law and avoid all forms of political thuggery. He also advised residents not to support politicians who encourage violence, noting that such actions hinder development and progress.
Responding, Hon. Yahuza said the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas had significantly improved security in the area, adding that incidents of kidnapping and other criminal activities had reduced considerably. He further noted that the council chairman had introduced measures to complement the governor’s efforts in maintaining peace and security.
