Wurkun, Karimjo Communities Agree on Peace, Set Up Joint Committee in Karim Lamido

The Wurkun and Karimjo communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State have agreed to work together to foster peace and reconciliation following renewed efforts to address lingering tensions between the two groups.

The resolution was reached during a Reflective Structured Dialogue (RSD) organised by the Taraba State Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management in partnership with Neem Foundation and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
The three-day dialogue, held from March 9 to 11, 2026 at the Karim Lamido Local Government Secretariat in Karim Lamido, brought together community elders, youth and women leaders from both Wurkun and Karimjo communities, as well as heads of security agencies and representatives of faith-based organisations.
At the end of the engagement, participants resolved to promote peaceful coexistence and rebuild trust between the two communities.
Among the resolutions reached was the establishment of a joint peace committee comprising representatives of both communities, security agencies and religious bodies to mediate disputes and promote dialogue.
The communities also agreed to embark on peace sensitisation and confidence-building activities aimed at strengthening relationships and preventing further conflict.
As part of the measures to improve security, youth from both communities will undertake joint patrols to help mitigate attacks and killings in villages within the area.
Women leaders from the two communities also pledged to play a key role in peacebuilding by organising prayers and fasting for lasting peace and harmony.
The newly constituted peace committee is chaired by the District Head of Karim, Mr Roman Tiri. Other members include Babayo Maji, Audu Wakili Kwanci, Adamu (Youth Leader, Wurkun), Joseph A. (Youth Leader, Karimjo), Musa Likita, Wanyo Bakari (Women Leader, Karimjo), and Felicia Baraya (Women Leader, Wurkun).
The committee also includes representatives of security agencies such as the police and army, as well as officials of the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Council.
The dialogue forms part of ongoing peacebuilding initiatives aimed at strengthening community dialogue and preventing violent conflict in parts of the state.
